Flying down to Saint Catharines for lunch

Saint Catharines is the main city in the Niagara region, which most people know for the Falls, but it’s also Canada’s largest wine-producing region. There’s a great little airport that about 7 km from the city, and also only about 11 km from Niagara-on-the-Lake. We flew down there for the first time this summer with our bikes, and rode into the city to grab lunch and meet up with a couple of friends who live there.

On the way to St. Catharines, we took the usual route around the shoreline, starting at Oshawa, flying past downtown Toronto, around the tip of the lake at Hamilton, and then on the Niagara region. Along the way, we got the enjoy some pretty scenery, including the CN Tower and marinas scattered along the lakeshore.

Before landing, we did a quick tour of Niagara Falls, the big attraction in the area. There are some specific rules around how to fly in the Falls flight zone, which took a fair bit of research to figure out and get straight before the first time we did that. On this flight, I couldn’t get good photos, partly because of cloudy conditions, and partly because of the green tint on my windows. But the Falls are always spectacular.

St. Catharines has seen a few good vegetarian and vegan places pop up, and we’d been looking forward to trying out Rise Above for quite a while. We were not disappointed, the food was nicely flavoured, fresh, and well prepared. They didn’t have indoor dining at this time, so we ate on the tiny patio just outside the front door, but the weather was warm enough for that.
